Senior driving course comes to Shelton on Oct. 29

A senior driving course for drivers 55 and older will be held October 29 at 9:30 a.m. at the Shelton Senior Center. Completing the course qualifies drivers for a 5–10% auto insurance discount, with a certificate issued at the end of the session.

The course is presented by Gerald “Gerry” Apple, an OSPI-certificated traffic safety teacher with more than 55 years of experience, and covers 30+ topics including freeway driving, roundabouts, night driving, and following distance.

Three seek Port of Shelton commission vacancy

Three candidates have stepped forward for the Port of Shelton commission seat left vacant by the death of Chairman Dick Taylor on September 20: Ned Wilson, former commissioner Sue Patterson, and Taylor’s wife Marlene Taylor.

Taylor had chaired the commission for 14 years. The port must appoint a replacement within 90 days of his death; the appointment process continues at the November 3 commission meeting.

In other port business: finance director Tricia Needham presented the preliminary 2027 budget — Sanderson Field revenue up about 28%, Johns Prairie up about 7%, with roughly $2 million in capital projects. A public hearing is set for October 20 at 2 p.m.

North Mason · Schools

North Mason students keep free meals through 2030

Every student in the North Mason School District will continue receiving free breakfast and free lunch through June 30, 2030. The district reapplied this summer under the Community Eligibility Provision and won approval from the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for another four years — no individual applications needed.

Also from the September 28 school board meeting: the board approved an emergency $1 million advance of state apportionment to cover staff and vendor payments November through March, to be repaid from April and July property tax collections.
